Buttery-Smooth UIs with React Transitions and Deferred Rendering

Links

Location

Indy Hall Clubhouse (Philadelphia)

Official Description

React's mental model is that your UI is always a function of your state. But what do you do if that function is really expensive? This talk provides a practical guide to React's deferred rendering features, so that you never have to worry about your UI locking up again.

Note

I am so torn up that I don’t have either a video recording, or any slides to put on this page. I worked until 4am several nights in a row to get this done in time (and was on the clock for work at 9am that same day).

Basically, Break Point (previously CTRL+Alt+Philly) doesn’t really have people record their presentations. And because some of the things that I brought up were things I learned on the job at Coder, the slides were made on a Coder Canva account. I didn’t have the foresight to ask if I could keep a copy of the slides, and now that I’ve been laid off, they’re just gone for good.

In light of that, enjoy some photos taken by Kyle Tyron (DevEx at Sentry and the main organizer of the events). If you have any questions about the talk, by all means, reach out to him.

Also, if you go over all the notes in the repo and the Notion doc I have at the top of this page, you can kind of get all the exact same information. The Notion doc was used to create the outline of the slides.

I’m also cooking up some ideas for new talks to give (including something I’ve never seen any of the React educators talk about), so next time, I’ll be sure to get a recording.
